The Mercedes-Benz Logo Explained

Mercedes-Benz Logo

Immediately recognizable, ubiquitously inimitable, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star carries a storied past with it, from Lodi to the farthest stretches of road. This iconic Mercedes-Benz logo meaning brings a depth that few can offer, as its long history reaches back to the origins of Mercedes-Benz in the 19th century! On used and new Mercedes-Benz everywhere, this logo embodies the core values of refinement and expertise, family and camaraderie, staples of the open road and true comfort. Read on with the Mercedes-Benz of Stockton specialists to learn more about the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo and its counterparts.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo History

Whether you’re referring to the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo or the original, its heritage begins back in 1890 with the founding by engineer Gottlieb Daimler. When Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek took over the ownership of the company, Daimler’s sons Paul and Adolf stayed involved. In 1909, the Daimler brothers drew inspiration from a long-lost postcard to make the Mercedes-Benz logo. Meaning gains weight with time, if memory serves, and for the brothers this was doubly so. The 3-pointed star on the postcard that mapped the location of their home seemed the perfect replacement for the previous logo, a small tribute to the enormous contributions of their father.

From there, the company (then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG) acquired the logo, at that time colored blue. The company modified the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star with a laurel wreath border in 1926, and the blue star changed to silver in 1934.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

Naturally, the honoring of the company’s heritage means more than simply an inside allusion to the correspondence between a father and his sons. Family has remained at the core of Mercedes-Benz, even from its earliest days. When Emil Jellineck first acquired 36 cars from DMG, he insisted they would bear the same name of his daughter: Mercedes. Mercedes-Benz has always looked toward the future and the generations to come, and the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning reflects that:

  • The trio of lines in the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star represent the company’s drive for universal motorization.
  • Few may know that each point also has its individual meaning: land, sea, and air.
  • These represent the drive to have Mercedes-Benz engines dominate on any terrain, in any field.
  • When Daimler and Benz merged in 1926, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was encircled, thus creating the mark that would come to be known the world over.

What About the Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo?

The more recent Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo seems shrouded in a meaning few could decipher, but ultimately it too is not that mysterious:

  • The Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo illustrates a cam, valve, and valve spring on the right side, representing a passion for engineering excellence.
  • The left side depicts an apple tree with a line underneath representing a river, representing the coat of arms of Affalterbach, Germany, where the AMG® headquarters are.
